Twitter Feature or Future Ads?

Twitter seems to have launched a possible new feature a few moments ago for a number of users, perhaps part of a larger rollout. Added unobtrusively into the right side bar is a small panel that appears to rotate between a plug for Twitter Search and Twitter Widgets.
As Twitter has yet to have a formal method of generating revenue, perhaps this is part of a larger ad system they are testing. However, with the number of Twitter-based apps in the wild and in development, there is less of a need to actually Tweet from the site. Could this possibly affect ad sales?
